# Month for Senior Citizens
Age related blindness is one of the biggest challenges among the elderly. This can also pose
danger, including the risk of falls and injuries. We have recently come across 90 years old Manju
Majumder in one of our eye camps at Ramkrishna Vedanta Ashram. She was suffering from
blindness in both eyes due to Cataract.
Abandoned by her son and daughter long back, she was living a miserable life full of agony and
challenges. She has no source of income and could not pay house rent for last few months. The
only support she gets is from the government ration shop through free food grains. She met with
an accident due to poor eye sight, but she did not give up hope! She went to govt. hospital
seeking eye treatment but unfortunately she did not get required treatment there. Finally someone
known to her asked her to visit the eye camp.
She underwent a successful cataract surgery by Dr. Sneha Batra at The Himalayan Eye Institute
and regained her eye sight. Though this poor old lady has gone through many challenges in her
life, but she did not lose hope. Several senior citizens like her had undergone sight restoration
surgeries at The Himalayan Eye Institute in the past few months through the generous support of
Innerwheel Club of Siliguri Uttorayon. Sometimes all it needs is a little humanitarian support to
bring back smile on the face of elderly people who often lead a life of illness, misery and
helplessness. As we are celebrating October as month of Older Persons , let us come together to
extend our helping hand to our respected seniors to make their lives bright and beautiful once
again.
